Health centers
For many years now, in addition to our two main hospitals, we have supported four health centers in remote villages in the Mayo Kebbi Est province. All of these centers were founded through the initiative of the local villagers, are recognized by the state, and are each managed by their own board of directors. They provide primary care in their respective regions and, depending on the season, are the only point of contact for hundreds of patients. Below you will find some information about each center.
Zigui Marba
The health center in Zigui Marba was rebuilt in 2017 thanks to the tremendous efforts of the villagers and our contribution. The following year, we were able to install a solar power system, and the batteries for this system were replaced in 2023, as expected, after their lifespan of approximately five years. The health center is heavily used by residents of the surrounding villages; the nurse in charge records 50-150 consultations and 5-20 births per month.

Ess Koumli
The village of Ess Koumli is located about an hour's drive from the town of Gounou Gaya. During the rainy season, the region around Ess Koumli is isolated for several months because the terrain is impassable for vehicles. A health center already exists, but with mud walls, a thatched roof, and very rudimentary equipment, it is in a precarious state. In 2023, we plan to construct a new building in Ess Koumli, modernize the existing equipment, and subsequently install a solar power system.

Kolong
In 2016, the villagers of Kolong built a new center, and we offered our assistance with the installation of a solar power system and the groundwater supply. This center, located near the border with Cameroon, is also frequently visited by patients from Cameroon.

Mahouna
To reach the village of Mahouna, follow the Logone River, which runs along the border with Cameroon, for approximately 2-3 hours. Here, a health center was built in 2012 with the support of a small NGO from Freiburg, Switzerland, also at the initiative of the villagers. Due to its geographical location and high population density, up to 600 patients are treated here each month. We are supporting the health center in Mahouna by training two midwives, as well as by renovating the building and installing a solar power system.
