Prevalence study of hepatitis B in southwestern Chad

Initial situation

During blood transfusions and routine testing at the hospital in Moundou in recent years, a high prevalence of chronic hepatitis B carriers has been subjectively observed. To objectify this impression, a study was planned in the southwest of the country. The population of Chad is very poorly informed about this disease, and very few are vaccinated against it. The study is being funded approximately 70% by Amitié Suisse Tchadienne, with the remainder being covered by the clinic in Moundou.

Project

To gain an indication of the actual prevalence of chronic hepatitis B carriers, schools in 11 villages were visited and the pupils systematically examined. The study ultimately found 23% to be chronic carriers of the virus, a surprisingly high result compared to neighboring countries. The complete study, which included testing of 1,150 children and adolescents, was submitted to the Chadian Ministry of Health in mid-February 2015. We also intend to publish the study in English and seek collaboration with larger organizations.
