X-ray machine for
El Jire Rapha

Initial situation

In the city of Moundou, with an estimated population of 800,000, there is only one X-ray machine, located in the regional hospital. This machine is frequently overloaded or malfunctioning, making it impossible to perform any radiological imaging. However, X-ray examinations are essential for diagnosing numerous medical conditions.

Ever since the association was founded in October 2012, there has been a dream to install an X-ray machine in Moundou to carry out diagnostic imaging outside the regional hospital.

Project

In mid-2015, the search began for a suitable device. A used Siemens Polyphos 30 M, including all accessories, was acquired in Germany at a reasonable price. It was transported to Zurich to be checked for completeness and functionality. Subsequently, it was transported along with other medical supplies by air freight to N'Djamena and then by land to Moundou.

Meanwhile, the El Jire Rapha Clinic has constructed a radiology building on the grounds of the medical clinic, based on the jointly agreed-upon plans. Additionally, two X-ray technicians were trained during this period. These two conditions were required contributions from the clinic and were fulfilled as agreed.

In September 2016, Alex and Julian Süsstrunk, along with a technician friend, traveled to Moundou to install and commission the device. The device arrived partially damaged and required repairs. After two days, however, the first X-rays were successfully taken, revealing excellent image quality. Subsequently, the two X-ray technicians received training on the device, and the first patients were examined. At the time of installation, the X-ray machine at the regional hospital was out of service due to a strike. Therefore, the newly installed device is the only one in Moundou and the surrounding area.

The plan is to procure various spare parts and deliver them to Moundou. In case of a breakdown, a locally trained technician could carry out repairs. The chemicals and films can be obtained from a dealer in Moundou or N'Djamena. The used chemicals will be stored sealed in barrels until proper disposal is possible. The price of an X-ray is the same as at the regional hospital (approximately CFA 3,000).
